By definition, Portrait photography is the type of photography aimed towards capturing the personality of a person or group of people by using effective photography techniques and accessories. But as of today, this is not the case always. Most of the time, the personality which the photographer is looking for will be expressed instead of the true personality of the subject. Yet, we can’t point fingers, because most of them are created for commercial purposes. They have to do what they have to do.
Carol Visser is a photographer whose portrait photographs perfectly fit into the definition of portraiture. They are not glamorous, but they are powerful and real. Her photographs capture the true personality of her subjects. Plus she has a fascinating choice of subjects for her portraits. She mostly shoots elderly persons & homeless persons. Almost all her portraits are tight headshots which focus the viewer’s attention solely towards the emotions of the subject. And the viewer gets to witness all the wrinkles, scars and grey hair up close on these old faces. It’s like the inevitable truth of life is written all over their faces.
According to her, many of these models are random people she met from time to time. Some are just elderly persons while some of them are homeless and some are suffering from certain mental conditions. A few of them have become regular models even. Although many of them are trying to smile, the traces of the tough life they have had or still having cannot be hidden with that smiles.
